Las Vegas police asked Google to identify people by what they searched. The next frontier of surveillance may begin with curiosity itself. Last week, I wrote about what happens when public safety becomes an operating system—when cameras, drones, license-plate readers, gunshot detectors and artificial intelligence begin communicating through
Las Vegas is integrating drones, cameras and artificial intelligence faster than the public conversation about governing them. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is no longer experimenting with one surveillance technology at a time. In a recent FOX5 interview, Sheriff Kevin McMahill described how Metro uses drones, automated license-plate readers,
The books behind Battleborn 2050 and the forces already shaping tomorrow Every work of speculative fiction has a bookshelf behind it. Before there are characters, conflicts or imagined worlds, there are questions. Who holds power? Who benefits when technology moves faster than democracy? What happens when public institutions become weaker
Most people will never read Curtis Yarvin. They won't study The Sovereign Individual. They won't spend hours listening to Silicon Valley podcasts debating network states, artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, private cities or whether democracy is equipped for the technological future. They don't need to. Because
Every week, it seems there's another conversation about artificial intelligence, political power, data, or who will shape the future. Some focus on AI's impact on work. Others examine how technology influences public discourse, governance, or the economy. Different headlines. Different industries. The same underlying question: Who
Every generation believes its defining technology will solve society's biggest problems. Steam. Electricity. Television. The internet. Artificial intelligence. Each changed the world. None replaced our humanity. Technology can optimize transportation. It cannot create belonging. Algorithms can predict behavior. They cannot teach forgiveness. Artificial intelligence may answer questions faster
Hollywood celebrates creators. History rewards owners. There is a difference. Writing a story creates value. Owning that story creates opportunity. Ownership allows ideas to become books. Books become films. Films become classrooms. Podcasts become documentaries. Characters become generations of new stories. Ownership isn’t only financial. It is cultural. It
People often assume a studio begins with cameras. It doesn’t. It begins with questions. Long before the first script is optioned… before the first actor is cast… before the first frame is filmed… there is observation. Every article saved. Every conversation remembered. Every strange headline clipped. Every pattern noticed.
Technology often arrives disguised as a solution. A tool to help us move faster. Think better. Know more. Connect further. But every technology also reveals something. Our priorities. Our incentives. Our fears. Our ambitions. In that sense, technology is less like a machine and more like a mirror. The systems
America has always been fascinated by frontiers. The frontier was never just a place. It was an idea. A blank canvas. A second chance. A place where old rules felt negotiable. Today, new frontiers are appearing everywhere: artificial intelligence. private spaceflight. digital currencies. autonomous communities. virtual worlds. The language changes.
Before people change their behavior, they change their beliefs. Before they change their beliefs, they change the stories they tell themselves. Every era has institutions that help shape those stories: newspapers. television. universities. religious organizations. political parties. Today, those institutions increasingly compete with algorithms. The feed does not ask what
Every system eventually reaches the same limit: people. No matter how advanced the infrastructure becomes, technology still collides with human reality: grief, loneliness, identity, trust, fear, community. A predictive model cannot replace belonging. An algorithm cannot fully measure dignity. Optimization does not eliminate inequality. And yet modern systems increasingly treat
